Azarketi names often sound like the sea. Many come from waves, storms, ports and old Azlanti words. If you play Pathfinder 2e, a good name can make your azarketi character feel real from the first game.
Writers can use these names too, for stories, novels and home games. Many of them work as aquatic names, nautical names and ocean names in any fantasy world, for gamers, writers and game masters alike.
This guide explains how azarketi names work in the rules. It shows the official sample names and gives you lists of male, female and neutral names. It also has a simple azarketi names generator you can use at the table, name ideas by community and tips for game masters.
All lore here comes from the Pathfinder books and the free rules pages. The long name lists are fan-made ideas. They are not official names.

Who Are the Azarketi?

The azarketi are water people in Golarion, the world of Pathfinder. The word is Azlanti. It roughly means “people of the seas.” Other people often call them gillmen or Low Azlanti.
Long ago, their human ancestors lived in the empire of Azlant. Then Earthfall came, and the empire fell into the sea. Strange sea beings called alghollthu changed some of the survivors so they could live in water. The children of those survivors are the azarketi.
Azarketi look like tall, strong humans. They have webbed hands and feet and three gills on each side of the neck. Many have violet eyes. Some have fins or scaled ridges instead of hair. They can breathe air, but they must go back to the water at least once a day.
Most azarketi live in the Inner Sea and nearby waters. Some live near ports and river towns. Gilltown, in the city of Absalom, is the largest azarketi community there. In Pathfinder 2e, the azarketi are an uncommon ancestry.
Azarketi Traits at a Glance
These are the original Pathfinder 2e numbers for the azarketi ancestry. The rules page for azarketi marks them as older (legacy) content, and newer books can change rules. Check which version your table uses.
| Trait | Azarketi |
| Hit points | 8 |
| Size | Medium |
| Speed | 20 feet on land and 30 feet swimming |
| Attribute boosts | Constitution, Charisma and one free boost |
| Attribute flaw | Wisdom |
| Languages | Common and Alghollthu, plus more if your Intelligence is high |
| Sight | Low-light vision |
The Azarketi Hydration Rule
Azarketi are amphibious. They can live on land and in water. But their skin needs water. An azarketi must go into water at least once in 24 hours. After the first 24 hours out of water, you take a minus 1 penalty to Fortitude saves. After 48 hours, you struggle to breathe air and begin to suffocate until you return to water.
The lore has a helpful trick. Many azarketi wear head wraps. A wet wrap hides the gills and gives a few more comfortable hours out of water. This is a great detail for your character.
Azlant and Earthfall
Azlant was a great human empire. Then came Earthfall, a huge disaster. Fire fell from the sky, and the sea swallowed the empire. Azarketi are the children of the survivors. Their art, songs and stories keep Azlanti culture alive. Most azarketi know where the nearest Azlanti ruin is, and many own a piece of Azlanti jewelry. That is why some azarketi names still use old Azlanti roots.
The Alghollthu
The alghollthu are old, strange beings of the deep. They once ruled the Azlanti. After Earthfall, they saved some survivors and changed them so they could live in water. Later, they treated them as servants. In time, the alghollthu seemed to lose interest and left the azarketi to build their own lives.
Today, azarketi feel many ways about the alghollthu. Some fight them. Some bargain with them. Some serve them, even against their will. Here is a naming idea: a character who fights the alghollthu might take a bold name, while one who bargains might take a quiet name. This idea is fan-made.
How Azarketi Names Work
The rules give three main ideas about azarketi names.
- Names from the sea and sky. Azarketis often take the names of nautical, weather or geographical features. These are features that matter to the family. Think of a harbor, a delta or a wind.
- Human names. Some azarketi groups pick human names. This helps them fit in with people on the surface.
- Very old names. Some names have been passed down for so many generations that they still use ancient Azlanti roots. Some name bodies of water that no longer exist.
Azarketi also likes small, close groups. Members often use warm family names for one another, even when they are not related. This gives you plenty of room for nicknames.
Official Azarketi Names in Pathfinder 2e
If you want azarketi names Pathfinder players can use right away, start here. The Pathfinder 2e (PF2e) rules list these sample azarketi names: Aft, Aliz, Cascade, Delta, Harbor, Ilani, Inkua, Jib, Lagoon, Lobay, Marine, Tidal, Windward and Zarket.
Look at the pattern. Many are plain English sea words, like Harbor, Lagoon and Tidal. A few, such as Aliz, Ilani, Inkua and Lobay, sound more like old Azlanti. Zarket may remind you of the word azarketi itself.
You can use one of these as a first name, a family name or a nickname. You can also use them as a model to build your own.
Azarketi Names Generator: Mix and Match
You do not need an app to make an azarketi name. Pick one start and one ending. You can roll a die, point at random or choose the ones you like best.
| Start | What it brings to mind | Ending |
| Tid- | tide | -a |
| Mar- | sea | -ora |
| Lag- | lagoon | -eth |
| Cor- | coral | -is |
| Nau- | ships | -an |
| Zar- | old Azlanti | -yn |
| Del- | river delta | -ira |
| Kel- | kelp | -os |
| Wyn- | wind | -ar |
| Ila- | bright water | -iel |
Here are some names made this way: Tidora, Mareth, Lagis, Coran, Zaryn, Delira, Kelos and Wynar.
Two quick tips. First, add a family name from the sea, like Tidal, Windward or Harbor. Second, if a name is hard to say, drop a letter or shorten it.
More Parts for Your Generator
Want more choices? Use these extra starts and endings the same way. Pick one from each column.
| Extra start | Extra ending |
| Sael- | -ine |
| Ond- | -orin |
| Pel- | -ara |
| Thal- | -ix |
| Oce- | -mar |
| Ner- | -ash |
| Aqu- | -en |
| Syr- | -ova |
| Vash- | -is |
| Cal- | -yth |
Some names made this way are Saeline, Thalara, Ocemar, Nerash, Aquova, Pelis, Vashyth and Syrix.
Here is a trick for the game table. Write the starts and endings on small cards. Draw one of each at random. This works like a generator button, and your friends can join in.

Nautical, Weather and Place Names
The rules say azarketi often take names from nautical, weather or geographical features that matter to their family. Here are word ideas that work well as names, nicknames or family names.
- Ship words: Keel, Helm, Mast, Anchor, Sextant, Bowline, Rigging
- Weather words: Squall, Gale, Mist, Monsoon, Zephyr, Drizzle, Thunder
- Place words: Atoll, Estuary, Strait, Shoal, Trench, Skerry, Brackish
- Sea life words: Coral, Pearl, Kelp, Urchin, Anemone, Squid, Cuttle
- Deep water words: Abyss, Trench, Depth, Twilight, Open Ocean, Undertow
- River and shore words: Stream, Rapids, Spring, Shore, Cove, Tidepool
If you want a name that feels very old, use a place that no longer exists. For example, your character could be “of Selvara Bay,” a bay that sank long ago. This follows the rule that some azarketi names point to lost bodies of water, and it gives you a story hook.
Azarketi Names by Community
Azarketi live in many places, so their cultures differ. These work as azarketi ancestry names, sorted by home. The community notes below come from the lore. The name ideas are fan-made.
Inzenti names
The Inzenti are the most common azarketi. They live in the Arcadian Ocean and the Inner Sea. Their names can mix sea words and human-style names. Try Marek, Tidora, Corran or Selmara.
Ozalon names
The Ozalon live in the warm seas of the south Arcadian Ocean and the Fever Sea. They are known for knowing tropical weather. Weather names fit them well. Try Zephyra, Galen, Monsa or Squall.
Usena names
The Usena live in the icy Steaming Sea. They wear sealskin and live in cold water. Try names that feel cold and hard, like Brinar, Skerra, Floe or Isla.
Alvadna names
The Alvadna live in the deepest parts of the ocean. Try deep, dark-sounding names like Thalor, Thessa, Abyssa or Trench.
Eravar names
The Eravar live in rivers, lakes and swamps. Try fresh-water names like Tarn, Rivael, Fenna or Eddy.
Surface Names, Family Names and Nicknames
Many azarketi spend time near towns and ports. Some groups choose human names to fit in with surface people. Good choices are Rowan, Maren, Elias, Sera, Tobias and Nell.
Azarketi communities also use warm family names for one another, even when they are not related. You can copy this idea in play. Try names like Old Keel, Little Shoal or Auntie Tide.
Short nicknames help too. Tidora can become Tid. Marisel can become Mari. Corran can become Cor.
A simple plan is to give your character three names. Use a sea name at home, a human name in town and a nickname with friends.

Azarketi Last Names and Clan Names
The rules say azarketi names often come from features that matter to the family. So family names can be place words or weather words. Here are fan-made ideas.

- Brightshoal: a family from sunny shallows
- Stormkeel: a family of storm sailors

You can also use “of” plus a place, like “of Selvara Bay,” for a very old family name.

Azarketi Backstory Ideas
A good backstory makes a name feel real. These places in the lore can give your character a home.
- Gilltown in Absalom: the largest azarketi community in the city. Your character could grow up among dockworkers. A name like Old Keel fits here.
- Escadar on the Isle of Kortos: the only city on land with an azarketi embassy. Your character could be a guide or a diplomat with a formal name.
- Kienek-Li: an azarketi city north of Starstone Isle. It gives you a home that belongs only to azarketi.
- Old Azlant ruins: your character could be a scholar who studies the ruins and wears Azlanti jewelry.
- Waterfalls and rivers: river azarketi live at the base of waterfalls, or in caves hidden behind them. A name like Tarn fits well.
- A hard past: your character may have escaped the control of the alghollthu, or may still hear their call.
How to Roleplay an Azarketi Character
The lore gives you many ideas for how to act at the table. Your name is part of the story, so say how you got it.
- You may work hard to prove people wrong, since many on the surface treat azarketi with distrust
- You may be shy around strangers
- You may call the water home but still be curious about life on the shore
- Others may expect you to know about the sea, and may ask for your advice on boats and tides
- Others may misread your gentle gestures and mild face
- You may hide your gills with a head wrap when you are in town
Try this at the table. Tell your friends the story of your name in one or two lines. Then tell them the nickname your friends use.
How to Pick the Perfect Azarketi Name

A good name is easy to say and easy to remember. These steps help you choose.
- Start with the story. Where did your character grow up? Was it a deep trench, a river or a busy port?
- Pick a family feature. Choose a harbor, a storm, a reef or a lost bay that matters to the family.
- Choose the sound. Soft sounds feel calm, like Lagia. Hard sounds feel strong, like Corran.
- Say it out loud. If you do not know how to say a name, you will not enjoy using it. Pick one way to say it and tell the table.
- Keep it short. Two or three parts are enough. Add a nickname if the name is long.
- Check the mood. A name for a brave fighter and a name for a shy scholar should not feel the same.
- Ask your table. Your friends will say this name many times, so make sure it works for them too.
How to Say a Name You Find
Not sure how to say this name? Break it into small sounds. Tidora becomes Ti-do-ra. Say each part slowly, then say the parts together. Choose which sound to stress, and pick one way to say it. Tell your table, and write a small note on your character sheet so you do not forget.
Azarketi Name Tips for Game Masters
Game masters need many names fast. These ideas help you name azarketi non-player characters (NPCs) and places.
- Use the mix-and-match table. It gives you a new name in seconds.
- Name elders with old roots. Give them names that sound like ancient Azlanti, such as Zaren or Zarra.
- Give surface workers simple names. Azarketi who work in ports may use human names or short nicknames.
- Name groups after water. Use features like a reef, a trench or a river mouth. Azarketi places in the lore include the city of Kienek-Li and the Gilltown neighborhood in Absalom.
- Let names show history. An azarketi named for a sunken bay tells players a story without a long speech.
- Keep lists ready. Write ten names on a card before the game, and cross them off as you use them.
Azarketi NPC Ideas
Here are six quick NPCs. All names and stories are fan-made, so change them as you like.
- Old Keel: a Gilltown dockworker who tells sea stories for coins
- Marisel Deepcurrent: an embassy guide who knows every tide
- Tarn: a river hermit who lives behind a waterfall
- Thessa: a sea scholar who studies Azlanti ruins
- Brinar Stormkeel: a ship pilot who can smell a storm coming
- Zaren: an elder who hums old Azlanti songs and may be hiding a secret
Azarketi and Other Water Folk
Azarketi are one of many ancestries that live in the water. They have the most contact with the athamaru, who are called locathah in older books. The lore calls them easygoing and friendly. Merfolk are often territorial neighbors, but both groups like privacy, so they mostly get along. Together they fight their shared enemies, the sahuagin.
Each of these peoples has its own naming habits. Do not copy their names. Use water words in your own way, and keep the azarketi feel with sea, weather and place words.
If you like water themes, you may also enjoy names for undine, a water-linked geniekin heritage, and for merfolk. These are separate heritages and ancestries, so check each one before you borrow a name.
Names for Other Pathfinder Ancestries
People who look up azarketi names often look up names for other uncommon and rare ancestries too. These include ghoran names, grippli names, conrasu names, vishkanya names and kashrishi names. Grippli is the older name for the tripkee in Pathfinder 2e.
Each ancestry has its own culture and its own naming habits. The water names in this guide fit azarketi well, but they will not fit these other ancestries. Check the Names entry for each ancestry before you pick one.
Names That Look Like Azarketi
Some people search for names like azar name, name azara, name azari, azeeka name meaning or azkeel name meaning. These names start with the same sounds as azarketi, but they are not azarketi names. They are real-world names, and each one has its own language, culture and history.
The meaning of a name like Azar can change by language. People also look up the azar name in Urdu or the azar name in Muslim culture. For answers like these, ask a trusted name source for that language and culture. Do not guess.
If you only want a name with an old Azlanti feel for a game, try the generator in this guide. Names like Zarra, Zaren and Zaryn are made for that.
Use Azarketi-Style Names for Other Projects

The same ideas work outside the game too.
- Code names: Many people ask how to choose a code name. Pick a short word from a theme, like Tide or Reef. Make sure it is easy to say and does not show private facts, like your real name or address.
- Names for different types of collectors: If you name a club for shell collectors or coin collectors, join a theme word with what the club collects. Try names like Shell Seekers or Coin Reef.
- Company names: You can use the mix-and-match table as a name for the company generator. Before you pick a name, search the web and the trademark records for your country to check that nobody already uses it.
- Usernames: Add a short family word like Tidal or Windward to a short name.
